Selective breeding is essential to producing show horses that are in demand. There is an old saying ‘Select the best to be bred to the best, and then hope for the best!’ The answer may not be as easy as that, but it certainly expresses the idea of strong selection, while there are no guarantees in what you get. Stallions are often thought to be the most influential part of the breeding. If they consistently throw quality foals, they quickly develop reputations and earn high stud fees. Stallions also are the ones in the spotlight: in breeding issues of equine magazines, in advertisements for studs. Genetically, the mare is responsible for at least 50% of the foal. Some breeders even argue by that the dam affects the offspring at a rate of 60% or more. Personally, i definitely agree!!! In the majority of cases, breeders will tell you the mare's characteristics override the stallion's. A rule in the breeding world is that you can breed a mediocre stallion to a great mare and still have a nice foal. But breed a great stallion to an undesirable mare? The results will be disastrous. Temperament, conformation and quality are each critically tied to the mare's genetic structure, a structure she passes from generation to generation. Therefore, understanding the mare's crucial role in the breeding process is an undeniably essential part of the breeding equation. So many breeders are guilty of this, i make no apologies for this statement. Breeding from inferior mares of unknown breeding will NOT improve the quality of miniature horses.This only creates inferior unwanted horses! Before every mating, i remember that every foal i breed needs an owner to love them for 30 years!! Every breeding season, i study and judge each mare for her positive characteristics and her weak points. Then i match her with one of my stallions that i believe will create something special. ALL of my mares have a lineage of more than 10 generations of pedigree.This is great for me as a breeder as i know exactly the bloodlines that my mares carry and essentially what they are. I do not breed from inferior or mares or unknown breeding and do not support that method of breeding and that is why i believe our home bred horses are winning at top level in the show ring due to breeding from selective stock.
